There’s an old saying that the best comedy material is created in a moment of spontaneous crisis. Truth be told, I just made that up, but it has all the promise of a soon-to-be old saying. That saying sums up the Village Theatre’s philosophy. We are an improvisational comedy troupe, and we take all of the material to fuel our stage performance from our audience.
Improv comedy is not a new concept. You may have seen it on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” or live on stages in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York, to name a few. But I can guarantee you there is no better improv troupe out there than the men and women you will see at the Village Theatre. Our members all have at least five years’ of performance experience (some have over ten), and many of us have trained and performed for multiple groups in Atlanta and elsewhere. We have gathered at the Village Theatre to improvise in a challenging, yet professional atmosphere, with the goal always to leave our audiences wanting more.
Our players are professional and courteous, and they bring experience from all over the country, as well as from a spectrum of “day jobs,” ranging from commercial real estate to medicine to law to writing and producing. All of this experience becomes fodder for spontaneous comedy, whether the show consists of a number of shorter scenes or one continuous long-form act. Our goal is to provide Atlanta’s cultural community with a fresh, new, and exciting venue to perform, to have fun, and most importantly, to laugh.
Most importantly, we are asking for your help. This theatre is a from-the-ground-up effort, with need for a newly-constructed stage, as well as patron amenities like a bar and comfortable seating. We want to make this the best improv comedy performance space in Atlanta, the Southeast, and eventually the nation. To do this, we would greatly appreciate any assistance that you can give, be it monetary or other resources. The start-up phase is generally the most difficult for any performing arts troupe, but we can make it a smooth and successful launch with your generosity.
We are pleased to be located at the intersection of several historic Atlanta neighborhoods, including Cabbagetown, Inman Park, and Old Fourth Ward, as well as the nearby Georgia State University campus. Our theatre is convenient to I-20, the Downtown Connector, and MARTA. Please come by and see us soon!
Many thanks, and here’s to laughter!
